Alexander Calder was born July 22, 1898, in Lawnton, Pennsylvania. Despite coming from a family of artists -his father was a sculptor and his mother a painter- Calder did not originally intend to become an artist. After high school, he enrolled at the Stevens Institute of Technology and graduated in 1919 with a degree in engineering.
